Chapter 17
âCome on in,â Leaf said, shaking Duke out of his shock. âTake a load off.â He seemed to forget this was my club. But we needed this Johnny Cash wannabe, so I let it go. For now.
Duke moseyedâactually moseyed! âover to the couch, sat with his back ramrod straight, and squinted at me. âNow, about you. You said parole? Whatâs the story there?â
âMCS was too overcrowded, so they decided to do some early release thing,â Johnson explained. âKaye, Amy, and I were close enough to the end of our sentences that we just got released. But Moss still had two years. He got out on good behavior but with parole.â
I nodded along, pursing my lips. âSure, parole sucks, but at least Iâm not at the rescue.â
Dukeâs eyes widened. âIn Georgia?â
I chuckled low in my throat. Even the cowboy had heard of it. âYeah. Dodged a bullet there.â
Sucking in a deep breath, Duke kept eyeing me. âThey tracking you?â
I didnât answer. It wouldnât work to lie to him. If I was found out, it would bring the whole operation down. They could still take out the auction without my help, but I really wanted to be able to go. Helping with the auction was my ticket out of trouble.
Duke shook his head and stood up, straightening his black clothing. He pulled a wand out of his pocket and pointed it at me. After a few seconds of my skin tingling, he lowered it. âYouâre definitely being tracked. If you want to come to the auction, get the tracker out of you. If you lead them to us, weâll kill you.â
I stared at him silently, knowing better than to ask how in the world I was supposed to get it out. I just nodded once.
As Duke turned to walk toward the door, Neil chuffed low in his throat, and even though he was currently in his skin, not his fur, he raised his leg and scratched his neck with his bare foot, grinning like a fool the whole time.
Duke stared with his mouth slightly agape, completely confused about what he was seeing.
âHeâs cool,â Leaf said. âGuy spent a considerable amount of time as a dog.â
âAnd heâs not coming to the auction,â Johnson said.
Duke took their words at face value and shrugged. âRight on.â And as surprisingly as he came in, he left.
âHow will we get in touch with him?â I asked. âHe didnât give us any information. Donât we need more information?â
Leaf chuckled. âMoss-man, Duke is the man.â He sounded like a surfer. âHeâll come to us when we need information. Donât you worry.â
I nodded, not trusting myself to speak. As much as it pained me to grin and bear it, we needed Leaf.
He looked around and stretched. âIâm going to head home for a few days. Iâll check in if I get any leads on jobs we can do in the meantime. I know you gotta keep a low profile.â He narrowed his eyes at me. âMan, you better make sure that tracker donât cause the gas station job to get pinned on you.
